Though written primarily for his family and descendents yet to come, the author hopes that his manuscript will stimulate pleasant memories of their formative years in other readers as well.

I enjoyed reading this excellent book. A true classic about a young boy growing up, and maturing to become a self assured and competent young man.The book describes in detail the ten years of Clarke Church’s life from 1940 when he was 12 years old, until he graduated from Dartmouth College in 1950 and was about to start working for Proctor & Gamble.
In 1940, Clarke was in the eighth grade in Evanston, Illinois. He enjoyed his classes and played on the basketball team. At the end of the school year, his family moved to the Philadelphia area, where he attended Upper Darby High School. He was a good student and did well academically. In his senior year, he was elected Class Treasurer, and was the Captain of the tennis team.
In 1945, his excellent record in high school resulted in his being accepted at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. He was the first student from his high school to attend Dartmouth. As a freshman, he was determined to do well academically. He studied 3 to 4 hours five nights a week, usually in the quiet stacks of the college library, and received excellent grades.
After his freshman year, he was drafted into the United States Army, where he spent 11 months mostly in Adak Island, Alaska, under difficult weather and living conditions.
In 1947, he was discharged due to the cutback in the U.S. military, and returned to Dartmouth. Clarke continued to study diligently. He also became actively involved with the student newspaper at Dartmouth. It is the oldest college newspaper in the United States. In his senior year, he became the Business Manager of the student newspaper, which was very helpful in increasing his understanding of business and sales.
In 1948, an important event was that Clarke met his future wife, Jane Dillman, to whom he is still happily married. In June 1950, he graduated from Dartmouth, with an outstanding academic record. Despite all the time he spent at the student newspaper, he still graduated Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa.
After Dartmouth, Clarke joined Proctor & Gamble, which has long been one of the most successful businesses in the United States. He stayed with P&G for 42 years before retiring as a senior executive in 1992.
